Coach Joey Calello brings passion, discipline, and a team first mentality to his role as Wide Receivers Coach and Co-Special Teams Coordinator for the Garden State Herd.
A former player turned mentor, Coach Calello uses his personal experience and high football IQ to develop athletes who are more than just playmakers they’re accountable leaders, intelligent competitors, and loyal teammates.
His coaching philosophy is built around five core values: Accountability, Team Loyalty, Leadership, Intelligence, and Respect.
Accountability
Coach Calello demands ownership on the field and in life. From making a clutch catch to handling responsibilities at home, his players are expected to show up, be consistent, and improve daily. “Kaizen applies to everything,” he says. “We’re not just building receivers we’re building men.”
Team Guy, Not Me Guy
His receivers are taught to prioritize the team above themselves. That means doing the dirty work blocking for a teammate, picking someone up after a mistake, or sacrificing stats for the good of the group. “When the game ends,” he says, “I want you to be able to say you did everything for your brothers.”
Leadership & Attitude
Coach Calello challenges his players to lead in their own way vocally or by example and maintain composure in pressure moments. He often reminds his unit:
“In high-pressure situations, talent isn’t the most sought-after trait. Poise and focus are.”
His group is expected to play with passion and controlled anger bringing energy, not chaos.
High IQ & Detail Oriented
In his system, being the fastest or strongest isn’t enough. Coach Calello teaches his players how to recognize coverages, find open zones, break down film, and master the details that separate good receivers from great ones. He connects football IQ with academic excellence reminding players that preparation and focus carry over into every part of life.
Respect & Loyalty
Above all, Coach Calello values respect. For coaches, teammates, the game, and themselves. He teaches that discussion builds growth, while arguments tear down teams. He models loyalty and respect to earn it from his players, on and off the field.
Every receiver in his room lives by one rule: ICE which means, I Catch Everything.
From jump balls to possession grabs, Coach Calello breaks down the art and science of elite catching techniques, turning his unit into a true Hands Team.
